Mosquito Prevention

Be aware of the Mosquitoes in your area.

Culex mosquitoes bite at night, mainly dusk and dawn.

Aedes aegypti are aggressive and bite throughout the day.

Prevent Mosquito Bites

Use insect repellent and cover skin. Look for repellents with active ingredients such as DEET, Picaridin, or Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus. According to the CDC, higher percentages of active ingredients provide longer protection.

West Nile virus or St. Louis encephalitis symptoms

Headaches, fever, joint pain, body aches and rashes can be caused by Culex mosquitoes. These viruses are not spread by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

Prevent Mosquito Development inside and outside your home

  • Dump water or remove saucers from plants.
  • Discard plant cuttings.
  • Dump the water from your pet's water source before refilling.
  • Cover all yard drains, even if they look dry.
  • Place a piece of window screen or foam inserts under drain caps and check them monthly.
  • Add foam inserts to curb-side drains. Drain tube foam inserts can be purchased online.

Keep Mosquitoes Out

  • Keep unscreened doors and windows closed.
  • Keep pet doors closed.
  • Remove items from entryways.
  • Be aware that security doors may not keep mosquitoes out.
  • Remember to dump out water from plant saucers.
